About the Developer

My name is Owen McGirr and I have Cerebral Palsy, which means that I am non verbal.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication is a subject that is very important to me. I have used it for the majority of my life. For that reason, I created SayIt!. I wanted to create a lean, fast, easy-to-use product and offer it at an affordable price. The ability to speak is a human right. It should be attainable for everyone.

Being in my position gives me a unique insight as a developer. I use SayIt! every day to communicate with the people around me. It is my lifeline, so I am deeply devoted to making it the best that it can be.

Growing up, I always saw how valuable that the art of communication was. Because I had to make so much more of an effort than everyone else. I found myself to be less involved in conversations, which was really frustrating.

In 2016, I started to work on SayIt!. I wanted to combine all my knowledge and experience of Augmentative and Alternative Communication to create a great, affordable product.

I like to live life to the fullest extent. In order to do that, I have to be able to communicate quickly. I have to be able to have meaningful conversations. SayIt! allows me to do just that.

I studied at the Atlantic Technological University in Letterkenny, where I earned a Diploma in Programming. Before that, I attended the usual mainstream education. I used various forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication during this time. However, nothing satisfied my needs. I did not want to have to carry around a laptop computer or a big eyesore of a tablet. Communication should be as easy as checking social media on your phone; open it, say what you want, close it.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication should be an extension of the user. It should be natural and simple because speaking is. Children learn to speak without even thinking about it because that is what we, as human beings, are built to do. Society should see Augmentative and Alternative Communication as a voice, not a barrier to shy away from. I love having a conversation with a stranger that just gets it. It is so refreshing!

The fact is that I am not different. I have the same needs and wants as everyone else. SayIt! helps me to obtain them faster.
